For Chelsey Adedoyin, the uniqueness of 91视频专区鈥檚 campus was the selling point.
鈥淭he buildings, the green鈥ow this campus is beautiful!鈥 Chelsey said of her first impressions of 91视频专区. The Laurel, Maryland, native knew about 91视频专区 from a high school friend who played in basketball tournaments on campus.
She also knew the close-knit campus was something she wanted.
鈥淚 love the small class sizes. I find that I excel when I can have a closer relationship with my professors,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he 91视频专区 community is really my favorite part of being here. Everyone knows each other, as opposed to a big school, where I don鈥檛 know anyone, no one knows me and maybe I don鈥檛 even know my teacher. That would be crazy.鈥
There is a downside to the close-knit community. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e always around people. There is truly no time to be alone,鈥 she said with a laugh. 鈥淚 just didn鈥檛 expect that, I really didn鈥檛. I was really shocked when I figured it out. I鈥檓 just always around people. The upside to that though鈥ou get to enhance your communication skills and networking. I鈥檓 always looking at the positive.鈥
In high school, Chelsey competed on the field hockey and track teams, was in Honors Orchestra, was involved with the African Student Association, a mentorship program and a member of Charles County鈥檚 Unified Bocce Team. At 91视频专区, she鈥檚 taking a step from so many extra-curricular commitments and is involved with just the Black Student Union and the Urban Outlet.
鈥淚 really just wanted to come here and see what the workload was like and get accustomed,鈥 she said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 still time next season to think about field hockey or music lessons, but I came here to get an education.鈥
The biology major hopes to go to pharmaceutical school at the University of Maryland after graduating from 91视频专区.
Remembering back to Scholars鈥 Day, 鈥渢hat was the most traumatic day!鈥 she said.
鈥淚t was my first time coming to 91视频专区 and I was so nervous. I had to be so polite. How do you have conversations with someone you just met? I just kept reminding myself, if they truly like you for who you are, then you鈥檒l get the scholarship.鈥
On waiting to find out: 鈥淚 was nervous. I was scared. But I don鈥檛 remember having to wait that long to find out,鈥 she said. And when she finally found out? 鈥淚鈥檓 so lucky, so blessed.鈥
Jenna Frick 鈥21
Had it not been for the offer of the Chair of the Board scholarship, Jenna Frick might not have visited 91视频专区, but the business major from Clermont, Florida, thought it was such a great opportunity she needed to explore it.
鈥淚 learned about 91视频专区 and applied because the golf coach (Chelsea Danel) had reached out to me,鈥 Jenna said, 鈥渂ut I wasn鈥檛 sure I wanted to move this far away from home, and after I got accepted, I hadn鈥檛 thought about it much. Then I got the call about applying for the scholarship.鈥
Jenna and her mother arrived in Frederick in early February for Scholars鈥 Day, where she endured a full day of interviews. It was noted by those who met with her that she 鈥渨as passionate about her studies and community service, extremely articulate and comfortable in the interview.鈥
Jenna remembered it a little differently. 鈥淭hat was a crazy day! I was so nervous.鈥 But her initial impression of 91视频专区 was all positive. 鈥淎s soon as I stepped on campus, I fell in the love with the school and it was at that moment, I knew I needed to go here.鈥
Waiting to hear whether she would be awarded the scholarship was 鈥渢errible. I can鈥檛 even explain it!鈥 she said. 鈥淚 think I checked the mail three times a day and when it finally arrived, my hands were shaking and I opened the letter鈥nd oh my gosh!
鈥淓verything just fell together for 91视频专区. I felt like I was missing something from all the other colleges I looked at. When that letter arrived, it was all really clear to me that I belonged at 91视频专区,鈥 she said.
The five scholars met at Accepted Students Day in the spring and formed a special bond. 鈥淲e have a group text so we check in with each other a lot. It links us all together,鈥 she said.
Now fully immersed into her freshman year, Jenna is on the golf team, considering a double major in business and economics, and involved with
Enactus (a student group dedicated to inspiring students to improve the world through entrepreneurial action), the Maryland Student Legislature and student government (vice president of her class).
鈥淭ime management is a huge thing鈥o stay on top of my classes, activities, practice,鈥 Jenna said. 鈥淏ut I鈥檝e surprised myself. There鈥檚 so much going on and it hasn鈥檛 been easy to be away from home, but I surprised myself in how much I can handle on my own.鈥
Natalie Kolosieke 鈥21
Natalie Kolosieke 鈥21 of Greensboro, North Carolina, aspires to have a career in the nonprofit sector and 鈥渕ake the world better鈥 after honing her management skills at 91视频专区.
鈥淭he types of nonprofits I鈥檓 looking at are more education, or women,鈥 she shared. 鈥淭hose are things that I鈥檓 really passionate about. I want to start working at a nonprofit, and if I really enjoy it, I may decide I want to start one.鈥
Natalie, whose father works for Habitat for Humanity, loves volunteering there and seeing the difference that she can make.
鈥淚t鈥檚 really rewarding work,鈥 she said.
Natalie was involved in management activities in high school, such as being the editor in chief of her school鈥檚 yearbook for two years, and discovered that she was good at it. She realized that she could combine her management skills with her love of nonprofits to make a career of helping people.
At 91视频专区, she is studying business administration and wants to pursue a minor in nonprofit and civic engagement studies.
鈥淚 looked at the business program, and I saw that 91视频专区 has a nonprofit minor, and I was like, 鈥榃hat? That鈥檚 crazy! Mom, we have to go!鈥欌
Natalie and her mother traveled from North Carolina to visit 91视频专区, staying with family friends and Frederick locals who had encouraged her to look into 91视频专区 when she had expressed interest in small liberal arts schools.
鈥淚 got to tour 91视频专区, and it was November, and it was icy and cold and kind of gross, and I was like, 鈥楾his is the prettiest place I鈥檝e ever been. I would love to go here,鈥欌 she said. 鈥淭hings fell into place with the scholarship, and now I鈥檓 here!鈥
How did she react to finding out that she had been chosen for the Chair of the Board Scholarship?
鈥淚 took the letter to my room to open, and my mom heard me scream, and then I started dancing,鈥 she recounted. 鈥淎nd my mom came upstairs and we happy danced for a little bit. It was really fun. It was perfect.鈥
Since beginning college a few months ago, Natalie has been surprised by how much she has learned in her classes.
鈥淭here鈥檚 just so much that I don鈥檛 know, so I鈥檓 definitely learning a lot,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd having to really take a step back and walk through your reasoning that you do so quickly. It鈥檚 really neat. Brain exercise, good stuff.鈥
She has also been surprised by the amount of time that she has to socialize.
She explains, 鈥淗ere it鈥檚 like, eat breakfast with your friends, go to class with your friends, meet them for lunch. And then after class it鈥檚 like, 鈥楧o you guys want to do homework together in the library?鈥, or, 鈥楲et鈥檚 all have a movie night if we don鈥檛 have too much work.鈥 And I love that because the people here are great, and I just love them!鈥
Grace Weaver 鈥21
Grace Weaver 鈥21 of New Market, Maryland, has a very clear vision of her future, aspiring to be a divorce lawyer in Miami.
鈥淚 just love the warm weather, and I figured that Miami is such a big city that there鈥檚 got to be someone getting divorced,鈥 she explains. 鈥淪ince third grade, my dad would tell me, 鈥榊ou鈥檙e gonna be a great lawyer, Grace,鈥 because I play devil鈥檚 advocate in a lot of discussions. I like to argue because I want to see different points.鈥
In high school, Grace had the chance to practice this passion through the mock trial club with her favorite teacher, Natalie Rebetsky, a 1985 91视频专区 alumna who was in charge of the club. Grace joined and fell in love with it.
鈥淥ne of the reasons that I was driven (to 91视频专区) was Ms. Rebetsky,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 actually have her 91视频专区 ring. She said, 鈥業 don鈥檛 have a daughter, but you鈥檙e like a daughter to me, and you鈥檙e going to my school.鈥 And so I have it, and it actually fits my finger perfectly.鈥
As a student-athlete in soccer and lacrosse, she enjoys being close enough to home to have her family鈥檚 support at games. In addition, she is glad to be nearby while her sister battles a second round of Ewing鈥檚 sarcoma.
鈥淚 feel like it was everything working around me, pushing me here. And everything just fell into place, like this is the place that I need to be,鈥 she said.
Grace never thought she would earn a prestigious scholarship, and she is excited to be rewarded for her hard work through the Chair of the Board scholarship.
鈥淚 was taught when I was little that you have to put in the work to get what you want,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 put in my work, and I was able to receive what I thought was never going to happen to me.鈥
The scholarship is a reward for her in more ways than one. 鈥淢y junior year, my mom said, 鈥業f you get a full ride, I鈥檒l take you on a cruise.鈥 I was not thinking it would ever happen.鈥 Remembering the day that she got the news, 鈥淚 opened the letter up, and I was just starstruck. I was like, 鈥極h my gosh, it actually happened!鈥欌
The cruise is planned for this summer, depending on her sister鈥檚 treatment.
And if it doesn鈥檛 happen this summer, it might happen next summer. It鈥檒l happen eventually. My parents say I earned it,鈥 she said with a smile. In the meantime, Grace will continue to experience college life at 91视频专区. 鈥淚t has been a huge change; it鈥檚 very different than high school. But I think what surprised me the most was that I found so many friends so quickly, and how easily everyone was able to click. It鈥檚 just so nice,鈥 she shared. 鈥淚 feel like there鈥檚 a match for everyone to find their friend here at 91视频专区.鈥
Caylee Winpigler 鈥21
鈥淢y goal in life is to do something that impacts people, and I want to make a difference,鈥 said Caylee Winpigler 鈥21 of Walkersville, Maryland.
She is considering a history and political science double major and an English minor.
鈥淚 have time still to decide, but I feel like if I go down maybe the political science route, it鈥檒l lead me somewhere that I will be able to make an impact,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 thought for a while that I could be a lobbyist for environmental science.鈥
In her AP environmental science class, she learned about environmental consequences and the domino effect of how actions affect other parts of the environment.
Caylee is not one to shy away from public speaking or meeting new people. In high school, she enjoyed reciting poetry competitively through a program called Poetry Out Loud, and serving as a student ambassador.
鈥淚 always loved doing that because I like to meet new people. So then, of course, that鈥檚 what led me to be a Blazer Ambassador,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd I鈥檓 so fanatical about 91视频专区 that I was like, 鈥楶lease let me do this!鈥欌
As a Frederick county native, Caylee was initially unsure about going to school so close to home, stating, 鈥淚 was on the fence before I first came to visit 91视频专区. However, when I came here, and through all of the multiple times I came to 91视频专区, I always was greeted so warmly, and everyone is so friendly, that I always came looking to see if there was that one disagreeable person, and I could never find them. It鈥檚 like they didn鈥檛 exist here. So with the atmosphere being so welcoming, I felt like I belonged here.鈥
When Caylee found out that she was being considered for the Chair of the Board Scholarship, she was bawling. Waiting for the decision to come in the mail, she said she felt sick.
On that fateful Friday, 鈥淚 handed my mom the envelope, and I said, 鈥業 can鈥檛 look at this. Can you please open it for me? I鈥檓 not gonna look at you,鈥欌 she recounts.
鈥淪o I handed it to her and I turned away, and I closed my eyes, and I was trying to just kind of center myself, and then I started to hear her cry. I looked, and she鈥檚 just nodding her head vigorously. And then the reception thereafter from my family was amazing.鈥
Since starting at 91视频专区, Caylee has been surprised by the amount of independence that she has.
鈥淏efore, you have to go through your parents to do anything. And not having them around, I do miss them a lot, but they鈥檙e so close,鈥 she explained. 鈥淚 do enjoy being able to make my own decisions without having to check with my parents first. So being able to manage my own schedule is very liberating.鈥
