FREDERICK, Maryland—91��Ƶר�� College will host its 9th Annual World Food Day celebration Oct. 21 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Whitaker Campus Commons.

Attendees will enjoy a keynote lecture from Rev. Heber Brown III, founder of the Black Church Food Security Network (BCFSN) based in Baltimore. His talk, “Beyond Food Charity: A Profile of a More Sustainable Path Toward Justice, Health and Healing,” will discuss his initiatives to provide healthy produce and other food through his work with the BCFSN.

Brown, a doctor of ministry, is the senior pastor at Pleasant Hope Baptist Church in Baltimore. For nearly two decades, he has been a catalyst for personal transformation and social change. His BCFSN, launched in 2015, combats food apartheid by helping historic African American congregations establish or expand gardens (or agricultural projects) on church-owned land. The network also links black churches and black farmers in a joint effort to create a community-controlled, alternative food system based on food and land sovereignty.

World Food Day is an international event that brings awareness to food inequity and the causes of food insecurity. This year, World Food Day focuses on making healthy and sustainable diets available and affordable to everyone for a Zero Hunger world.
